Pong had no occupation. I know that he was formerly a "boy" in European employ. I do not know what his surname was. He was a young man. I do not know what district in China he belonged to. I knew him for a year before he came to ask for the money for No.47. I knew him because he used to take Chu Tsai Kam's place in collecting and distributing bribes when Chu Tsai Kam was absent from the Colony.
When A Pong came to ask me for the money for No.47 I said "I am not surprised because he has been to disturb Wa Lane several times. I asked A Pong how much he wanted. A Pong said $1.50 a day.
I agreed to pay $1 a day. A Pong said that he must go & see if No.47 would be willing to accept it or not. The next day A Pong came and said that No.47 would reduce 20 cents. A Pong asked for 5 cents a day wages. That made the amount $1.25 a day. I said "if I give him money he must not go to Wa Lane to disturb the place". A Pong said "if you give him the money he will not disturb you".
After the money was paid No.47 never came to disturb the place.
It was about a year after the great plague that the payments commenced. They were continued up to the 19th of the 5th moon (13th June) whenever the gambling house was open. When the gambling was stopped temporarily no payments ...
